Module 1: why theory matters in love relationships.

Why theory matters in love relationships.

  1. To be skilled at anything, whether it is tennis, mathematics or meaningful love relationships, you need to understand the underlying principles. Theory will help you make sense of practice, and it guides you through complexity.
  2. For example, materials science struggled for centuries and only advanced significantly after the discovery of the periodic table of elements. Similarly, partner selection can benefit from a clear understanding of its core principles.
  3. Would you fly a plane without understanding its cockpit? Partner selection might be more complex than flying a plane and without knowhow your love life might resemble a box of chocolates: you never know what you get next…😊.

Why start with theory?

  1. Selecting a partner is more than chemistry, butterflies and holding hands at sunset. It involves complex decision making, avoiding risks and asking deep questions that would make a psychology professor nervous😊.
  2. By understanding the theory behind love relationships, you’ll be better equipped to make conscious choices and avoid common pitfalls.
  3. Although love is for many people experienced as a spiritual state that happens to you, for this course we use a logical approach to love because this allows us to analyze it clearly and practically. Love feels magical, but even magic has rules, just ask Harry Potter😊.
  4. The best decisions are made when both the heart and the brain are involved. This is especially true for love relationships because of the rose-colored glasses that are caused by chemicals that we produce during the honeymoon phase and that may cause a blurred vision of our partner.
